RESEARCH & DESIGN CELL

The Design Cell is the research and consultancy division of the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture and Environmental Studies and was started with an intention to research on Mumbai in 1995. It interacts with the various agencies concerned with development and explores methods of understanding and intervention in the Metropolis. It has carried out various mapping experiments in the city and has used these findings in actual projects like the redevelopment of industrial lands and public participation in the conservation of early suburban development.

The Design Cell has been actively involved in efforts to map the urban environment in order to understand it better, articulate its problems and find alternatives for interventions. The Cell works with a team of architects and other consultants for history, economy, social geography, infrastructure and planning.

The Design Cell has undertaken several projects in the city of Mumbai and has successfully involved with them. It has become an important actor in the development processes of the city where it has been able to theoretically and actually articulate a new practice and is been seen as a trustee because of its academic affiliations.

THE DESIGN CELL

Architectural and Urban Academic space has historically in the country been structured towards the provision of a skilled labor force to fit into a market. Often this has led to a serious lack of intense research and theoretical work, as it is seen as irrelevant to the spaces of traditional practice predominantly controlled by private interests. Sometimes architectural theory that challenges the preconceived notions of the practice is dismissed and denied. This does the architectural profession a great deal of harm, as it then refuses to acknowledge the urgent need to meditate and postulate new ways of thinking that are relevant to our particular context. The space of the academy provides a platform for these inquiries.

The Research and the Design Cell at KRVIA was set up as a space where the theoretical and research agendas of the school could connect with the spaces of practice in the city. It is a space, which allows for a critical and reflective practice in architecture and urbanism. The process of consultancy helps us engage with the actors and agencies involved with the architectural production. Most of the projects are financed by government bodies like BMC, MMRDA and MHADA, and other non-governmental organizations.

This allows the work of the Cell to help shape the emerging city in a direct way. These projects also are projected backwards into the academy as part of the curriculum of the school. Architectural and Urban Design Studios, Technology Studios are integrated with the research areas of the projects. Students are thus exposed to the research questions and the findings of the projects, aiding in their understanding of the projects. The design cell thus works as an important interface informing the curriculum about aspects of practice and vice versa.

Presently the projects of the Design Cell are largely located in the city of Mumbai. Hitherto the projects have largely focused on issues concerning the transforming industrial landscapes of the city- the mill lands and the eastern seaboard, issues related to conservation of older city fabrics and structures, housing and looking at natural water systems and their conservation. . In Mumbai city where all development is dictated by the market or by narrow private interests the Design Cell has been able to carve a niche for serious and dedicated research in the neutral space of the academy.

URBANISM

The city of Mumbai has been the most important focus of the Design Cell. The city has been its laboratory for experimenting various methodological explorations in mapping and intervening. Often, mapping itself became the intervention of the academy. The Cell has undertaken various projects relating to the city of Mumbai and its current socio-economic landscapes.

POST INDUSTRIAL LANDSCAPES
  • "Study and preparation of an integrated development plan for the Mill lands of Bombay", 1995. The project was for the Correa Committee appointed by the Government of Maharashtra and sponsored by the Urban Design Research Institute. It is expected that the cell would work with the National Textile Corporation and seek funds from the MMRDA to proceed for the second phase of the project.
  • "Studying and Formulating Development Strategies for the Eastern Waterfronts (The Port-Lands) of Mumbai", (Current). The project is done in collaboration with the Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI). The first stage of the project was sponsored by the UDRI and the K. Raheja Foundation. The second stage of the project is sponsored by the Infrastructure Finance and Development Corporation.
URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
  • "Conservation and providing guidelines for the Dadar Parsi and Hindu Colony Precinct", 1999, sponsored by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. This project could be seen as an effort in organising communities towards becoming active participants in the otherwise polarised processes of urban conservation in the city.
  • "Versova Integrated Landscape" (Current) The residents' association of Versova has approached the Design Cell to prepare an integrated landscape proposal and a comprehensive study report for the future development of the area. The Design Cell has suggested a proposal for a joggers park in the neighbourhood.
  • "Conservation of Powai and Vihar Lake Surroundings", (Current). The project deals with the study and formulation of guidelines for development of the environmentally sensitive area around the fresh water lakes within the city of Mumbai. The project is sponsored by the Environment Conservation Society of the Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority.
URBAN POLICY
  • "Study of the transfer of Development Rights in the Island City of Mumbai" (Proposed). The study deals with looking at the development problems of the island city as a whole. The project is proposed to the MMRDA for sponsorship.
REGIONAL PLANNING
  • "Preparation Of A Vision Plan For Mumbai - Pune - Nasik" (September - December 2002). The Design Cell has been approached by the Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation, which is involved in preparing a Vision Plan for the Golden Triangle comprising Mumbai, Pune and Nasik as a part of 'Maharashtra Vision 2005' (a document prepared by the Maharashtra Economic Development Council). The scope of the project is to help articulate the changes that are being envisioned into formulating strategies for regional plans and development plans of the three cities and to co-ordinate them.
ACADEMIC ENDEVOURS

The Urban Research of the Design Cell has equipped it with undertaking various academic activities. One of the primary efforts is towards archiving the city The Cell has created an independent research on the city and has created an archive of maps, images, and documents on various aspects of the city of Mumbai.

This research also becomes the basis for analysis of urban areas, intervention formulation, and various dissemination efforts of exhibitions, studios, and seminars.

EXHIBITIONS
  • "Metropolitan Lab" (Feb 2001), a mixed media presentation mapping of the tendencies of architectural production and urbanism in the city of Mumbai in the 90s. The project was made for Tate Gallery's (London) inaugural show 'Culture City', showcasing 9 cities in the World, Bombay being one of them.
ARCHITECTURAL DOCUMENTATION
  • "Documenting Works of Claude Batley", (August 2000 - October 2000), The project included documenting works of Sir Claude Batley, an architect practicing in pre-independent India and involved with a large number of projects in Mumbai.
  • "Documenting ST. THOMAS CATHEDRAL", (January 2002 - September 2002). The project included documenting the first church in India built by the British. The Project was sponsored by the Anglo-Saxon Foundation.
